Where it came from
Zap was released in 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the set marked a significant shift in the game's design philosophy, focusing on multicolored cards and a central narrative involving the invasion of the plane of Dominaria by the Phyrexians. As a common card within the set, Zap served as a functional utility piece, providing players with a way to both damage a target and cycle through their deck.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators from the early years of the game. Rush’s design for Zap utilizes his signature style to depict the chaotic energy of the spell, aiming to visually convey the immediacy and fleeting nature of the strike. While the card is not considered a high-rarity collector's piece, it remains a notable example of the era's focus on efficient, versatile mechanics that defined the playability of the Invasion block.
