Where it came from
Zealous Conscripts was originally released in the 2012 set Avacyn Restored, designed as a high-impact red creature capable of temporarily seizing control of a permanent. Its inclusion in the 2017 Modern Masters set was part of a curated selection intended to support specific drafting archetypes and provide players with access to key cards from Magic: The Gathering's modern history, framed within a premium, reprint-focused product line.
The card's iconic illustration, created by artist James Zapata, depicts a swarm of fervent soldiers surging forward, capturing the chaos and urgency of the card's mechanics. The design is widely regarded for its strategic utility in 'combo' decks, particularly when paired with cards like Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker to achieve an infinite damage loop. Within the community, the card is respected for its ability to shift the momentum of a game instantly, cementing its status as a staple for red-aligned aggressive and control strategies alike.
