Where it came from
Call of the Conclave was originally released in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering expansion Return to Ravnica, representing the Selesnya Conclave, one of the game's ten distinct guilds. The card was designed as a thematic staple for the guild's token-focused strategy, allowing players to summon a 3/3 Centaur creature token for a low mana cost. This reprint in Modern Masters 2017 brought the card to a wider audience, featuring updated aesthetics that maintained the original's emphasis on the nature-bound, community-centric philosophy of the Selesnya.
The art for this specific printing, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures the essence of the Conclave's unity and martial spirit. Staples, a frequent contributor to the game, opted for a composition that emphasizes the arrival of the token entity, reflecting the guild's mechanics of rapid growth and fortification. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats and its ability to act as a reliable pressure tool during early-game exchanges.
