Zeriam, Golden Wind

Zeriam, Golden Wind was introduced as part of the Dominaria United Commander set, released in 2022 to coincide with the broader return to the iconic plane of Dominaria in Magic: The Gathering. As a legendary Griffin creature, Zeriam was designed to serve as a tribal commander, emphasizing a creature type that has appeared sporadically throughout the game's history but rarely received dedicated mechanical support. The card embodies the high-fantasy aesthetic of the setting, drawing on traditional angelic and avian motifs associated with the white mana color identity.

The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who rendered the creature with a focus on regal, radiant imagery consistent with the theme of aerial dominance. Development for such cards typically aims to provide players with a specific engine—in this case, generating a swarm of tokens—to encourage deck-building around often-overlooked creature types. Upon its release, Zeriam was noted by the player community as a flavorful addition that finally gave Griffin-themed tribal decks a cohesive mechanical leader.
