Where it came from
Zeriam, Golden Wind was introduced as part of the Dominaria United Commander set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to coincide with the main Dominaria United expansion. This set was designed to capture the return to the iconic plane of Dominaria, leaning into themes of nostalgia and the grand history of Magic: The Gathering. As a legendary creature, Zeriam was crafted to serve as a specialized commander for players interested in a Griffin-themed tribal deck, providing a unique mechanical payoff for prioritizing creatures of that specific subtype.
The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Johannes Voss, who is well-regarded for his ethereal and glowing aesthetic within the game's art direction. Voss focused on the majestic and soaring nature of the creature, utilizing a radiant color palette to emphasize its connection to the skies and its 'Golden Wind' moniker. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful, niche addition to the Commander format, appreciated primarily by enthusiasts of tribal synergy decks who welcomed the opportunity to build around a creature type that had previously lacked a dedicated leader.
