Where it came from
Released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, this card depicts the legendary Shu Han general Zhang Fei. The set was designed to introduce the mechanics and lore of the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history to a broader audience, with the card art and flavor text emphasizing the character's historical reputation for immense strength and fierce loyalty.
The illustration was created by artist Yang Qi, who utilized a bold, dramatic style to capture the intensity associated with the general. The design choice aimed to balance the aesthetic traditions of historical Chinese portraiture with the established fantasy art style of the Magic franchise. Upon release, the set was noted for its unique focus on a specific historical narrative, and while its mechanics were sometimes viewed as experimental compared to standard expansions, the cards have since become sought after for their thematic depth and cultural subject matter.
