Where it came from
Zhalfirin Void was released in 2018 as part of the Dominaria expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a geographical location in the lore of Zhalfir, a nation in the continent of Jamuraa that was phased out of reality to escape a demonic invasion. Its inclusion in the set was intended to evoke the return of classic Dominarian locations and themes that had been absent from the game's narrative for many years.
The card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who was tasked with conveying the surreal, shimmering nature of a void that exists outside of normal time and space. The design focuses on the visual language of the plane of Dominaria, utilizing a color palette that suggests both isolation and the residual magical energy of the phased-out nation. It was well-received by players for its utility in deck-building, specifically for its scry ability, which allows for consistent deck manipulation.
