Where it came from
The Zombie Giant token was released in 2018 as part of the Battlebond expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Battlebond was a unique set designed specifically for Two-Headed Giant play, emphasizing cooperative gameplay and thematic synergy between partners. These tokens were produced to represent a specific creature type generated by cards within the set, serving as a physical play aid to track board states during chaotic multiplayer matches.
The artwork for the Zombie Giant was created by Greg Staples, an illustrator known for his atmospheric and often dark contributions to the game. Staples aimed to capture the imposing, lumbering nature of a giant reanimated through necromancy, utilizing high-contrast lighting and textured brushwork to emphasize its decaying yet powerful form. The design was well-received by players for its vivid aesthetic and clear visual distinction from standard, smaller zombie tokens.
