Where it came from
Zombie Fanboy was released in 2004 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Unhinged set, a silver-bordered expansion designed to break the traditional rules of the game with humor and meta-commentary. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the set was intended as a lighthearted departure from the serious tone of standard tournament play, focusing on cards that toyed with game mechanics and pop culture tropes.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who employed a detailed, macabre style to depict a zombie wearing a 'fanboy' t-shirt. The design serves as a satirical nod to the hyper-dedicated hobbyist, poking fun at the intensity of fan culture within the community itself. Upon release, it was well-received by players who appreciated the set's self-aware wit and its willingness to poke fun at the game's own player base.
