Zombie Master

Zombie Master was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the foundational mechanics of the Swamp-dwelling undead. The card provides a tactical advantage by granting swampwalk and regeneration to all zombies, a design choice intended to establish tribal synergy as a core identity for black-aligned decks. As a card from the early era of the game, it reflects the somewhat whimsical and dark fantasy aesthetic established by the original creative team.

The version from the Classic Sixth Edition set, released in 1999, features updated artwork by Carl Critchlow. This edition was notable for being the first to incorporate the comprehensive rules overhaul that modernized the game's structure, standardizing how creature abilities interacted with the battlefield. Critchlow’s illustration transitioned the character away from the more primitive style of the nineties into a more gothic, detailed presentation that aligned with the increasingly sophisticated visual language of the late twentieth century.
