Zombie Master

Zombie Master was originally introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Fifth Edition core set in 1997. Designed during the infancy of the trading card game, it was conceived as a lord-style creature that provides a mechanical synergy by granting both swampwalk and regeneration to all zombies on the battlefield. This design reflected the game's early focus on tribal archetypes, where specific creature types were rewarded for clustering together under a central thematic leader.

The artwork for the Fifth Edition printing features the iconic illustration by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most prolific early artists. His visual interpretation of the character leans into the grim, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the mid-90s era of the game. While Fifth Edition cards are often categorized by their white borders and updated rules text intended to streamline gameplay, the Zombie Master remains a foundational piece of black-mana strategy, cherished by collectors for its role in establishing the zombie creature type as a persistent threat in the game's history.
