Zombie Master

Zombie Master was originally released in the Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing one of the foundational creature types of the game. It was designed during the early development of the Trading Card Game by Richard Garfield and his team at Wizards of the Coast, intended to provide strategic synergy for black-aligned decks by granting swampwalk and regeneration to all zombies on the battlefield. The Unlimited Edition, released in late 1993, featured the iconic white-bordered aesthetic that defined the print run, serving as a functional reprint meant to satisfy the rapidly growing player base.

The illustration for Zombie Master was crafted by artist Dameon Willich, who contributed several pieces to the game's nascent card pool. Willich’s aesthetic approach leaned into the grim, high-fantasy gothic horror tropes prevalent in early 90s tabletop gaming, utilizing a gritty, detailed style that helped establish the visual identity of the game's undead archetypes. While the card’s power level has fluctuated as the game evolved, it remains a celebrated relic of Magic’s early design philosophy, prized by collectors for its historical significance within the original core sets.
