Provenance

Where it came from

The Zombies theme pack is a featured component of the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in December 2022. This set was designed to be a self-contained, replayable experience where players combine two theme packs to form a deck, facilitating quick play without the need for traditional deck construction. The design philosophy centers on accessibility and thematic cohesion, pairing iconic creature types with mechanics that reward tribal synergy.

The art for the front card of this pack, which highlights the quintessential undead aesthetic of Magic's black-aligned creature types, was rendered by illustrator Igor Kieryluk. Known for his atmospheric and detailed fantasy work, Kieryluk aimed to capture a sense of relentless, decaying dread that is synonymous with the Zombie archetype. Upon release, the set was well-received by the community for its diverse mechanics and the utility of its reprints, with this specific pack being lauded for its reliable performance in the Jumpstart format.
