Akuma-kun (Original Version)

Akuma-kun first appeared in the early 1960s as a rental manga series created by Shigeru Mizuki. Conceived during the height of the Japanese rental manga boom, the series was inspired by Mizuki's fascination with occultism and folklore, blending traditional supernatural themes with a mid-century critique of social structures. Unlike his later, more whimsical work, this original iteration was darker and more experimental in its portrayal of a young prodigy attempting to conjure demons to create a utopia.

Mizuki utilized his signature high-contrast, detailed illustration style to depict the interplay between the human world and the bizarre, shadowy realm of spirits. While it was initially produced for a niche market of rental libraries, the series gained significant cultural traction over the decades, eventually becoming a cornerstone of Mizuki’s bibliography. Its success paved the way for multiple reinterpretations, but the original version remains widely regarded as a significant early example of Mizuki's ability to ground surreal yokai narratives within a humanistic framework.
