Kaiki to Fuushi Sakuhinshuu

Kaiki to Fuushi Sakuhinshuu, which translates to a collection of strange and humorous works, serves as a testament to the distinct dual nature of Mizuki Shigeru’s creative output. Published as part of his extensive career, the volume compiles short stories that highlight his unique ability to bridge the gap between unsettling folklore and lighthearted, satirical observations of Japanese society. The collection emerged from his long-standing fascination with the supernatural, deeply influenced by his wartime experiences and his lifelong research into yōkai, or traditional Japanese spirits.

The aesthetic of this collection reflects Mizuki’s signature artistic style, characterized by detailed, atmospheric backgrounds featuring his iconic yōkai designs contrasted against simple, almost caricature-like renderings of human characters. This intentional juxtaposition allowed Mizuki to ground his supernatural tales in a relatable, mundane reality. Upon its release, the work was received as a quintessential example of his versatility, solidifying his reputation not just as a pioneer of the horror-manga genre, but as a master of blending the macabre with a humanist, often whimsical sense of humor.
