The Great Yokai War

The Great Yokai War, or Yokai Daisenso, originated as a 1966 film concept, but Shigeru Mizuki—the preeminent scholar and illustrator of Japanese folklore—adapted the material into his own distinct manga style to further his lifelong mission of cataloging and popularizing yōkai. Mizuki drew heavily from traditional woodblock prints and oral histories to design these creatures, aiming to render the supernatural both unsettling and oddly endearing to a post-war generation that was rapidly losing touch with rural folklore.

Mizuki's work is celebrated for its contrast between highly detailed, grotesque depictions of monsters and the simpler, caricature-like designs of his human protagonists. His contributions to the franchise effectively codified the visual identity of many modern yōkai in Japanese pop culture, transforming them from obscure local legends into cultural icons. The publication remains a cornerstone of Mizuki's bibliography, lauded for its archival value as much as its narrative engagement.
