Where it came from
Alabaster was serialized in Weekly Shonen Champion between 1970 and 1971, marking a period where Osamu Tezuka was actively transitioning toward darker, more mature storytelling themes. The series emerged during an era of significant social unrest in Japan, and it reflects this intensity through a grim narrative centered on James Block, a character driven by profound self-loathing and a desire to alter his appearance through scientific means.
Tezuka drew heavy inspiration for the aesthetic and tone of Alabaster from the classic thriller genre and the psychological depth of noir cinema. The protagonist's physical transformation into an invisible entity serves as a visceral allegory for the corruption of the human spirit. While the series was received as a jarring departure from the whimsical works that first defined his career, critics have since identified it as a foundational text in the author's late-career exploration of morality, vanity, and the consequences of unchecked human ambition.
