Swallowing the Earth was serialized in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday between 1968 and 1969. Created by the legendary Osamu Tezuka, the series represented a marked shift in his approach to manga, moving away from his signature gentle, child-friendly storytelling toward the darker, more cynical tone of the gekiga movement that was gaining popularity at the time. The narrative centers on Zephyrus, a woman with the ability to kill men with her kiss, who seeks to destroy humanity as revenge for the abuse she suffered at the hands of men, reflecting the cultural tensions and evolving social complexities of late-1960s Japan.

Tezuka drew inspiration for the project from the shifting landscape of his industry, aiming to prove that he could master the gritty, adult-oriented themes that his younger contemporaries were beginning to pioneer. The character designs blend his iconic, rounded style with far more mature, provocative themes, creating a stark visual contrast that mirrors the internal conflict of the protagonist.
