Album studiosorum Academiae Lugduno Batavae MDLXXV-MDCCCLXXV: accedunt nomina curatorum et professorum per eadem secula

Published in 1875 to commemorate the tercentenary of Leiden University, this monumental register was compiled by the university librarian Willem Nicolaas Du Rieu. The volume serves as a comprehensive academic record, documenting the names of every student, curator, and professor associated with the institution from its founding in 1575 through the end of its three-hundredth year in 1875. It remains a foundational text for historians of the Dutch Golden Age and European academic development.

The design of the work reflects the scholarly rigor of the nineteenth-century Dutch bibliographic tradition, prioritizing exhaustive archival accuracy over decorative flourish. Du Rieu was motivated by the need to create a unified, chronological index of the thousands of scholars who passed through Leiden, which had long served as a vital intellectual hub in Europe. Upon its release, the volume was highly regarded by the academic community for its meticulous editing, establishing a standard for institutional historical records that is still cited by researchers today.
