Where it came from
Released during the height of the Urusei Yatsura television anime's popularity in the 1980s, this volume belongs to the 'Anime Comic' series published by Shogakukan. These books were created by taking direct animation cells and backgrounds from the anime episodes, arranging them into manga-style page layouts, and adding dialogue bubbles to provide a digest-like reading experience of the broadcast content.
The project was heavily associated with the creative vision of Mamoru Oshii, who served as the primary director for the early Urusei Yatsura anime series. Oshii’s influence on the franchise is well-documented for its surrealist humor and stylistic departure from Rumiko Takahashi's original manga. This volume, focused on the father-son dynamic and domestic antics typical of the show, reflects the distinct blending of cinematic framing and frantic gag comedy that defined Oshii's tenure on the production.
