Where it came from
Arion was conceptualized by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, a legendary figure in animation known for his character design on Mobile Suit Gundam. Originally serialized in Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Comic Ryū beginning in 1979, the work reimagines Greek mythology through a post-apocalyptic, high-fantasy lens. Yasuhiko aimed to blend classical epic tropes with his distinct, fluid artistic style, creating a narrative that explores themes of fate and conflict among gods and mortals.
The manga was subsequently adapted into a feature-length animated film in 1986, which Yasuhiko also directed. The design aesthetic is characterized by sweeping, dramatic compositions and detailed, expressive character work that reflects the trends of 1980s Japanese animation. Upon its release, the series was well-regarded for its visual ambition and remains a notable example of Yasuhiko’s ability to bridge the gap between traditional manga storytelling and cinematic animation direction.
