Where it came from
Star of the Kurds is a historical manga series authored by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, a legendary figure in the Japanese animation and manga industry known for his intricate character work and commitment to historical narratives. The series reflects Yasuhiko's long-standing interest in the complex geopolitical and cultural landscapes of the Middle East, a theme he explored with his characteristically detailed art style and a penchant for humanistic storytelling that centers on the struggles of individuals caught in larger historical conflicts.
The work emerged during a period in Yasuhiko's career when he frequently pivoted away from science fiction to focus on historical fiction, drawing upon intensive research to frame the Kurdish experience. Critics often highlight the series as a testament to the mangaka’s ability to weave sociopolitical commentary into a narrative framework, with his draftsmanship praised for its fluidity and its capacity to evoke the stark, expansive environments of the region.
