Where it came from
Joan is a historical manga series written and illustrated by Yasuhiko Yoshikazu, first serialized in the early 1990s. Yoshikazu, best known for his foundational work on character designs for Mobile Suit Gundam, shifted his focus toward meticulously researched historical narratives in his later career. This particular work serves as a reimagining of the life of Joan of Arc, framed through a distinctively personal and dramatic lens that emphasizes the weight of historical destiny.
The design and artistic approach reflect Yoshikazu's signature style, characterized by expressive, cinematic panel layouts and a deep commitment to historical atmosphere. The work was received as a sophisticated exploration of the Hundred Years' War, moving away from traditional hagiography to explore the psychological complexities of the young protagonist. It remains a notable entry in his bibliography, esteemed by collectors for its narrative depth and the technical proficiency of its hand-drawn illustrations.
