Ashi-Girl

Ashi-Girl, authored and illustrated by Kozueko Morimoto, began its serialization in Shueisha's Cocohana magazine in 2011. The series emerged during a period of renewed interest in genre-bending historical romance, blending the rigorous tropes of the Sengoku period with the lighthearted sensibilities of contemporary shojo manga. Morimoto crafted the narrative to focus on Yui Hayakawa, a sluggish high school student who accidentally travels back to the sixteenth century, creating a dynamic exploration of personal growth set against the backdrop of feudal political turmoil.

The design and artistic direction of the series are characteristic of Morimoto's focus on expressive, character-driven storytelling, utilizing a blend of comedic timing and earnest emotional beats to distinguish the work from more somber period dramas. The manga received a positive critical reception for its humor and the unconventional development of its protagonist, eventually leading to a television adaptation that further solidified the franchise's standing in the Japanese cultural landscape.
