Mobile Police Patlabor

Mobile Police Patlabor, or Kidō Keisatsu Patlabor, originated in 1988 as a collaborative multimedia project by the group Headgear, which included manga artist Yuuki Masami, director Oshii Mamoru, writer Itō Kazunori, mecha designer Izubuchi Yutaka, and character designer Takada Akemi. The series was conceived to explore a grounded, near-future Japan where heavy industrial robots known as Labors are utilized for construction, inevitably leading to the creation of the Metropolitan Police's Special Vehicles Division to combat robotic crime.

Yuuki Masami's manga serialization, published in Weekly Shōnen Sunday, established the character-driven tone that defined the franchise. By focusing as much on the mundane bureaucratic struggles and personal lives of the police officers as on the tactical deployment of the AV-98 Ingram units, the work moved away from pure action tropes. The series was highly regarded for its blend of political satire, procedural realism, and technical detail, eventually evolving into a sprawling canon of films, original video animations, and television series that remain cornerstones of the mecha genre.
