Where it came from
Do Kizoku Monogatari, or The Story of the Soil Nobles, is a manga series created by the acclaimed mangaka Yuuki Masami, primarily known for his work on Patlabor and Birdy the Mighty. Serialized during a period when the author was exploring themes beyond his typical science fiction repertoire, this work focuses on the idiosyncrasies and day-to-day lives of agricultural practitioners. It reflects Yuuki's signature ability to blend meticulous research with dry, observational humor, grounding the narrative in the realities of farming culture.
The series is noted for its distinctive visual style, which emphasizes expressive character designs while maintaining a clear, grounded aesthetic suitable for its slice-of-life subject matter. Upon its release, it was well-received by readers who appreciated the author's pivot toward character-driven episodic storytelling. It stands as a testament to the versatility of Yuuki’s portfolio, demonstrating his comfort in shifting between high-concept genre fiction and the quiet, rhythmic nuances of rural Japanese life.
