Where it came from
Atashi Mary-san. Ima Isekai ni Iruno... is a work of manga authored by Sasaki Ichiro that draws upon the well-known Japanese urban legend of Mary-san, a ghost doll who repeatedly calls her former owner to announce her closing proximity. By transposing this classic creeping-dread narrative into the isekai genre, the work explores a thematic shift where the supernatural antagonist is relocated to an alternate reality, blending traditional J-horror tropes with the fish-out-of-water mechanics prevalent in modern serialized manga.
The series reflects the contemporary tendency to subvert familiar folklore through genre-bending, a stylistic choice intended to provide both novelty and an eerie contrast to standard fantasy adventures. Sasaki Ichiro utilizes the manga medium to pace the jumpscare-oriented nature of the original telephone legend while focusing on the tonal dissonance of a cursed doll struggling to navigate a foreign fantasy world. Upon its release, it was noted primarily for its unconventional blending of horror and light-novel style world-building.
