Where it came from
Babel Nisei, or Babel the Second, debuted in Weekly Shonen Champion in 1971. Created by the prolific manga pioneer Yokoyama Mitsuteru, the series emerged during a period when supernatural and psychic powers were becoming a prominent motif in Japanese comics. The story centers on Koichi, a young boy revealed to be the successor to an ancient alien entity, tasked with protecting Earth using his vast telepathic and telekinetic abilities.
Yokoyama’s design for the series leaned into a clean, cinematic aesthetic that emphasized the scale of the protagonist's powers and the mysterious nature of his three legendary servants. Upon its release, the manga was well-received for its tight narrative pacing and its departure from the more traditional mecha or sports genres Yokoyama was known for. Its success cemented its status as a foundational psychic-battle manga, influencing generations of creators who followed in the genre.
