Where it came from
Bakemono Recchan is a collection of short stories by the acclaimed mangaka Inio Asano, published by Shogakukan in 2015. The volume serves as a representative anthology of Asano's stylistic evolution, gathering various standalone manga chapters that were originally serialized in magazines like Big Comic Spirits. Asano curated these stories to capture the unsettling, melancholic, and often surreal atmosphere that defines much of his work, exploring themes of social anxiety, obsession, and the complexities of human relationships in contemporary Japan.
The design of the volume reflects Asano's characteristic commitment to aesthetic detail, blending hyper-realistic architectural backgrounds with his distinctively expressive, slightly stylized character designs. The collection was well-received by fans and critics who follow Asano's trajectory; it is widely viewed as a companion piece to his longer, more famous series, offering a window into the thematic preoccupations that inform his deeper psychological narratives. The book remains a staple for enthusiasts interested in the craft of modern seinen manga.
