Where it came from
Black Jack M is a manga series authored by Sou Michiko that serves as a spin-off to Osamu Tezuka’s seminal medical drama, Black Jack. Published in the early 2000s, this series was developed during a period of renewed interest in the iconic rogue surgeon character, aiming to reinterpret the themes of life and medical ethics for a new generation of readers while maintaining the gravitas established by the original source material.
The design and narrative approach of the series emphasize a more contemporary aesthetic and tone, reflecting the stylistic shift in shonen manga during the turn of the millennium. By focusing on the philosophical weight of Black Jack’s decisions, Sou Michiko sought to honor Tezuka’s legacy while providing a fresh perspective on the title character’s internal struggles, garnering a steady following among fans who appreciated the modern visual interpretation of the classic anti-hero.
