Where it came from
Black Jack: The Black Doctor is part of the seminal medical manga series created by Osamu Tezuka, which debuted in 1973 during the golden age of Japanese comics. Tezuka, often referred to as the god of manga, drew upon his own background as a licensed physician to craft stories centered on the mysterious, unlicensed surgeon Black Jack. The series was conceived during a period of transition for Tezuka, serving as a darker, more cynical exploration of medical ethics, life, and mortality that contrasted sharply with his earlier, more whimsical works.
The character design of Black Jack—defined by his iconic cloak, scarred face, and severe demeanor—was crafted to reflect a man existing on the fringes of society, embodying both the brilliance and the moral ambiguity of his profession. The series was met with immense acclaim for its humanistic approach to complex dilemmas, effectively establishing the medical thriller genre in manga. It remains a cornerstone of Tezuka's legacy, celebrated for its technical mastery and the depth of its philosophical inquiries.
