Black Jack ~Blue Future~

Black Jack ~Blue Future~ was published in 2011 as a unique tribute to Osamu Tezuka’s seminal medical manga, Black Jack. The project was initiated as part of the celebrations marking the centennial of Tezuka's birth, inviting acclaimed mangaka Hitoshi Iwaaki to reinterpret the iconic character. Iwaaki, widely respected for his mature narrative style in works such as Parasyte, sought to capture the core essence of the rogue surgeon while applying his own distinct, grounded storytelling approach to the medical drama.

The design of the volume reflects a transition from the classic, whimsical aesthetic of the original 1970s series to a more contemporary, introspective tone. Iwaaki focused on the ethical dilemmas inherent in Black Jack's practice, emphasizing the stark realities of surgery and human frailty. Upon release, the volume was received by critics and long-time fans as a respectful homage that successfully updated the mythos for a modern audience without losing the darker, philosophical undertones that defined Tezuka's original vision.
