Where it came from
BNA, or Brand New Animal, originated as an original anime television series produced by Studio Trigger and directed by Yoh Yoshinari, debuting in 2020. The project was conceived to explore themes of social identity and coexistence within a fictional world where humanoid animals known as beastmen live in a secluded city-state. Its development followed Studio Trigger's signature high-energy visual style, emphasizing expressive character designs and vibrant, kinetic animation that became a hallmark of the studio's contemporary output.
The character designs were primarily handled by Yusuke Yoshigaki, who aimed to create a distinct visual contrast between the anthropomorphic inhabitants and the human world. The series was released globally through Netflix, garnering attention for its bold color palette and its allegorical approach to prejudice and multiculturalism. Critics generally praised the show for its world-building and artistic flair, marking it as a notable entry in the studio's portfolio of original animation projects.
