Where it came from
Ludwig Herrig compiled this expansive anthology in the mid-19th century to serve as a comprehensive educational resource for German students of the English language. Published in Braunschweig, the collection reflects the burgeoning 19th-century European interest in Anglo-American literary history, aiming to provide non-native speakers with a structured overview of literary evolution through well-chosen prose and poetry excerpts.
The design of the volume adheres to the pedagogical standards of the era, focusing on the systematic presentation of biographical sketches and historical context alongside the literary specimens. Herrig was a respected philologist who intended the work to function as a standard textbook, a goal realized through its widespread adoption in European classrooms, where it remained a staple reference for several decades due to its rigorous and scholarly selection of authors.
