The British Classical Authors. Select Specimens of the National Literature of England and America with Biographical Sketches and an Historical Outline of English Literature: Poetry and Prose

The British Classical Authors was compiled by Ludwig Herrig in the mid-19th century as a comprehensive pedagogical tool for students of English literature in Germany. During this era, the study of the English language and its literary canon gained significant momentum in continental European schools, and Herrig’s work served as a definitive anthology to bridge cultural and linguistic gaps. The volume was carefully structured to include biographical sketches, historical outlines, and representative excerpts, establishing itself as a standard text for academic instruction rather than mere leisure reading.

The design of the volume reflects the rigorous intellectual standards of Victorian-era educational publishing, prioritizing utility and accessibility for the non-native reader. Herrig’s selection process was grounded in the aspiration to present a balanced overview of both British and American literary traditions, an ambitious scope for a single volume. The book was received with considerable academic approval, becoming a staple in gymnasiums and universities across the German-speaking world for several decades, praised for its clarity and the breadth of its selections.
