Where it came from
Ludwig Herrig compiled this expansive anthology in the mid-19th century as a comprehensive resource for students of the English language in German-speaking territories. First published in Braunschweig, the collection was intended to provide a structured gateway to the canon of British and American literature, offering both historical context and representative specimens of prose and poetry to support formal academic instruction.
The volume reflects the pedagogical rigor of the Victorian era, blending biographical sketches with a chronological historical outline to frame the literature for a non-native audience. Herrig designed the work to serve as a standard textbook, prioritizing readability and educational utility, which ensured its long-standing presence in European libraries and universities for several decades following its initial release.
