Where it came from
Cat Eyed Boy was created by the legendary manga artist Kazuo Umezu and originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 1967. Umezu, often referred to as the godfather of Japanese horror manga, crafted the series to blend supernatural dread with a distinctively macabre aesthetic. The story follows a hybrid protagonist, neither fully human nor cat, who is ostracized by both worlds and constantly draws misfortune to those he encounters, serving as a dark observer of human cruelty and moral decay.
The design of the series reflects Umezu’s signature grotesque art style, characterized by unsettling character proportions, high-contrast black-and-white ink work, and surrealist visual metaphors. Upon its debut, the series challenged the conventions of shonen manga by introducing mature, visceral horror elements to a younger audience. It has since been recognized as a foundational work in the genre, lauded for its psychological depth and its influence on later generations of horror creators in both Japan and abroad.
