House of Insects

House of Insects, known in Japan as Konchu-zoku, is a seminal work by the influential horror manga artist Kazuo Umezu. Originally published in the early 1970s, the collection reflects Umezu's signature style, which masterfully blends psychological dread with visceral, grotesque body horror. It emerged during a period when Umezu was solidifying his reputation as a master of the genre, pushing the boundaries of what was considered acceptable or even readable in mainstream manga publications of the time.

The narrative design of the collection centers on the unsettling transformation of the human form, a recurring motif in Umezu’s body of work. By framing human anxieties through the lens of insectoid metamorphosis, the artist aimed to provoke a primal sense of disgust and alienation. The work is widely recognized for its high-contrast, dramatic paneling and a unique artistic aesthetic that has since influenced generations of horror mangaka and filmmakers, marking it as a foundational text in the history of Japanese horror comics.
