Where it came from
Scary Book is a seminal horror manga anthology series created by the legendary Kazuo Umezu during the 1970s. Emerging during a period when Umezu was cementing his status as the architect of modern Japanese horror, the series served as a showcase for his signature blend of visceral body horror, psychological dread, and surreal imagery. These stories were initially serialized in manga magazines before being compiled into volumes, capturing a unique cultural moment where the medium began to explore more mature, unsettling themes for younger readers.
The design and artistic direction are quintessential Umezu, characterized by high-contrast linework and unsettling, distorted facial expressions that have become iconic within the genre. Umezu sought to provoke a physical reaction of unease, often placing ordinary characters in impossible, nightmarish scenarios. Upon release, the series was both controversial and critically influential, establishing tropes and visual styles that would go on to define the aesthetics of Japanese horror manga for generations of artists who followed.
