Christopher Gist of Maryland: And Some of His Descendants, 1679-1957

Christopher Gist of Maryland: And Some of His Descendants, 1679-1957, was compiled and written by Jean Muir Dorsey and published in 1958. The volume serves as a comprehensive genealogical record of the Gist family, tracing their lineage from the late 17th century through the mid-20th century. It emerged during a period of heightened interest in American colonial genealogy, reflecting a scholarly effort to document the descendants of Christopher Gist, an early settler and prominent figure in Maryland history.

The book is a classic example of privately published mid-century genealogical research, often utilized by historians and descendants to verify ancestral ties. Dorsey’s work is noted for its meticulous collection of primary source data and family records, aiming to consolidate scattered information into a singular, reliable reference. Within the genealogical community, the volume is well-regarded for its structural clarity and its role in preserving the lineage of a family that played a significant part in the westward expansion and political life of early America.
