Where it came from
Chubby General, known in Japan as 'Chibikko Gie-chan,' was created by mangaka Takeuchi Tsunayoshi and serialized in the late 1960s. The series emerged during a period of burgeoning interest in gag manga, focusing on the comedic and often chaotic exploits of a small, rotund, yet authoritative protagonist. It stands as a significant example of the slapstick humor and character-driven storytelling that defined the period's lighter manga landscape.
The character design reflects Tsunayoshi's signature style, which emphasizes expressive, exaggerated features meant to convey humor at a glance. By centering the narrative on a diminutive general figure, the work satirized institutional power through the lens of childhood absurdity. While the series remains a niche cult classic today, it is recognized by manga historians for its role in the evolution of episodic comedy manga, reflecting the creative experimentation common among artists working for major publishers during that era.
