Where it came from
Chubby in the Swimming Club, known in Japan as Pochamani, is a manga series authored and illustrated by Ema Toyama. The series began its serialization in Kodansha's Bessatsu Friend magazine in 2012, emerging as a distinct entry in the shoujo genre by centering on a protagonist who navigates high school life and romance while comfortably embracing her larger body type.
Toyama designed the series to challenge conventional beauty standards often prevalent in manga, focusing on the character Tsugumi Motohashi's confidence and personal growth. The work was noted by critics and readers for its positive portrayal of self-acceptance and its lighthearted, refreshing approach to romantic tropes, ultimately providing a nuanced alternative to the common tropes found within the school-life manga demographic.
