Where it came from
Daikyou Enmusubi, illustrated by the manga artist Nishikata Mai, emerged from the contemporary shoujo manga tradition that explores the intersection of traditional folklore and modern romance. The title, which translates roughly to Great Misfortune Marriage Connection, plays on the cultural practice of visiting Shinto shrines to draw omikuji, or paper fortunes, which often dictate the success of one's romantic future.
Nishikata Mai is celebrated for her delicate line work and an evocative aesthetic that captures the bittersweet nuances of burgeoning relationships. Her work on this series is noted for its ability to balance emotional vulnerability with a whimsical, often melancholic atmosphere, grounding the narrative in the deeply human desire for connection despite the cosmic odds often presented by the series' titular bad omens.
