Where it came from
Detective Ritual, written by Eiji Otsuka and illustrated by Housui Yamazaki, originated in the mid-2000s as part of a trend in Japanese seinen manga that blended investigative procedural elements with occult and psychological horror. Otsuka, a prolific cultural critic and writer, utilized the series to explore his ongoing thematic preoccupations with folklore, sociology, and the intersection of traditional myth-making with modern urban life.
The visual direction provided by Yamazaki favors a stark, atmospheric aesthetic that leans into the unsettling nature of the narrative. By combining conventional detective archetypes with the darker, surreal manifestations of Japanese legends, the creative team aimed to challenge the tropes of the mystery genre. Upon its release, the series was recognized by readers for its dense intellectual scaffolding and its refusal to simplify its complex, often disturbing, underlying concepts.
