Where it came from
Leviathan is a dark science fiction manga series written by Eiji Otsuka and illustrated by Yuu Asamiya, originally serialized in the early 1990s. The narrative emerges from a period of intense interest in cyberpunk and bio-horror themes within the Japanese manga industry, blending complex philosophical inquiries about human nature with visceral, high-stakes action sequences. Otsuka, known for his academic and literary approach to genre fiction, utilized the series to explore themes of genetic manipulation and existential dread.
The visual aesthetic of the series, shaped by Yuu Asamiya’s detailed character designs and mechanical renderings, serves to ground the fantastical elements in a gritty, industrial atmosphere. The work was received as a notable contribution to the seinen demographic, appreciated by readers for its dense plot structures and willingness to engage with darker, morally ambiguous subject matter. It remains a representative artifact of the mid-90s experimental manga boom, reflecting the era's fascination with the intersection of biotechnology and societal collapse.
