Where it came from
Do Your Best!! Robocon originated as a pioneering tokusatsu series produced by Toei Company, debuting on television in 1974. Created by the prolific manga artist Ishinomori Shoutarou, the franchise focused on the charming, slightly clumsy robot Robocon who attends a school for robots to improve his skills and earn 'heart marks.' The manga adaptation, illustrated by Ishinomori, captured the whimsical spirit of the television show while reflecting the author's signature blend of heartfelt storytelling and mechanical design aesthetics.
Ishinomori designed Robocon to be an approachable and endearing character, moving away from the more aggressive robot archetypes prevalent at the time. By highlighting the character's failures and his persistent, hardworking nature, the manga resonated deeply with young Japanese readers, emphasizing the value of effort and resilience. The series became a cultural touchstone of the mid-1970s, establishing a legacy that has seen multiple television revivals and solidified Ishinomori's influence on the children's media landscape.
