Where it came from
George! George! was created by the prolific manga artist Ishinomori Shoutarou, a foundational figure in the medium who is best known for pioneering the Henshin hero genre. The series emerged during a period of experimentation in late 1960s Japanese manga, where Ishinomori sought to blend his signature kinetic, expressive visual style with narratives that explored the absurdity and rapid social shifts of the era.
The title reflects the artist’s interest in international pop culture trends of the time, utilizing a rhythmic, repetitive structure characteristic of his more whimsical character-driven works. While less globally synonymous with his name than series like Cyborg 009, George! George! is regarded by scholars as a quintessential example of Ishinomori's technical versatility, showcasing his ability to pivot between serious science fiction and lighthearted, character-focused humor.
