Where it came from
Dokuro is a manga series written and illustrated by Saruwatari Tetsuya, a mangaka widely recognized for his intense, high-octane seinen works. The series belongs to a lineage of violent, action-oriented narratives that explore the fringes of underworld society, characteristically defined by Tetsuya's hyper-muscular art style and gritty thematic focus on martial arts, survival, and moral ambiguity.
The series emerged from the competitive landscape of Japanese seinen manga, where artists like Tetsuya honed a signature aesthetic of visceral realism and elaborate character designs. While less universally cited than his flagship series, Dokuro remains a quintessential example of his artistic evolution, reflecting the aesthetic expectations of readers drawn to the raw, kinetic storytelling that defined Tetsuya's career during this period.
