Where it came from
Don Dracula originated as a manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka, serialized in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shonen Champion between 1979 and 1980. The narrative serves as a humorous subversion of the classic vampire trope, focusing on a Dracula who moves to modern-day Tokyo with his daughter, Chocola, only to find himself struggling with the complexities of contemporary life and the difficulty of finding a steady supply of blood.
Tezuka’s design for the titular character draws on traditional gothic horror iconography while reinterpreting it through his signature expressive, rounded aesthetic. Although the series was intended to be a lighthearted comedic exploration of the fish-out-of-water premise, it was received as a somewhat niche work compared to his more monumental contributions to the medium. The series remains a notable example of Tezuka's ability to blend dark supernatural elements with his gentle, satirical storytelling sensibilities.
