Hi no Tori

Hi no Tori, or Phoenix, was conceptualized by Osamu Tezuka in the mid-1950s as his life's work. Inspired by his deep interest in history, biology, and the human condition, Tezuka intended the series to explore the cycle of life, death, and reincarnation across different eras of time, from ancient Japan to the distant future. The narrative is centered on a legendary bird whose blood grants eternal life, a catalyst that forces various characters to confront the existential consequences of immortality.

Tezuka’s design for the series utilized his signature expressive character work, shifting in complexity and thematic darkness as the volumes progressed. Originally serialized across various magazines beginning in 1967, the work stands as a seminal piece of manga literature. It is widely regarded by critics as a masterpiece that solidified Tezuka's reputation as the 'God of Manga,' praised for its philosophical depth and its willingness to tackle themes that were considered unusually mature for the medium at the time of its creation.
